Liberty County dominant as Wewa's fall continues

WEWAHITCHKA — Terrance Evan’s mouth moved as fast as his feet did Friday night and Wewahitchka couldn’t catch either of them.

Liberty County’s multi-dimensional quarterback scored three of the Bulldogs’ five touchdowns and racked up two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in a District 2-1A blowout that turned chippy.

But Liberty County kept its cool in a 33-0 win.

“It was a district game and both teams wanted to win,” Liberty County coach Grant Grantham said of the emotion.

Once again, Liberty County (4-1, 1-1) put its running game on display with Evans and running backs Keith and Kevin McCray. The three combined for 215 yards, four touchdowns and one fumble by Kevin McCray. He scored the game’s first touchdown on an 11-yard run and Evans scored the next three on runs of 1, 21 and 4 — one in each of the last three quarters.

Those touchdowns were scored in the normal course of Liberty County’s offense, Grantham said. It was the Bulldogs passing game, however, that caught his attention. Evans was 4 for 6 for 74 yards.

“I haven’t been throwing it all year,” Grantham said. “We hit a few passes and it opened up.”

Liberty County had the game in hand 26-0 when sophomore Daniel Deason intercepted Wewahitchka quarterback Beau McCorvey and returned 48 yards for a touchdown.

The teams combined for 14 penalties, coaches from both teams having to separate players. McCorvey completed just two of 10 passes for the Gators. Chance Knowles ran for 79 yards on 19 carries, but the Gators’ lack of offense concerned Wewahitchka coach Todd Lanter.

“We had a good game plan,” Lanter said. “It was 12-0 at halftime. We’ve blown three coverages. We just stopped doing a good job of defending it. They ran the same stuff in the first half” as they did in the second.

“Our inability to move the ball more is killing us.”

The Gators fell to 3-3 and 0-2 in the district.
