District 2-2A golf: Mosley fails to advance, Webb moves on
LYNN HAVEN — As the golf scores climbed, all Mosley could do was hope for the best on Monday.
The best didn’t come for the Dolphins as a team, however, as they failed to advance out of the District 2-2A girls golf tournament at Panama Country Club. Mosley was fourth with a 447, one stroke behind Tallahassee Leon. The top three teams in the five-team district advanced to the regional round next week.
Mosley’s Courtney Webb was among the top three individuals to qualify from non-advancing teams. She shot a 91, which was five strokes higher than her score on the same course during the Bay County championship. Mosley’s other scores also were higher and it led to elimination.
“Last year was the first time a Mosley girls team made it to regionals,” coach Todd Harless said. “And we were almost back to regionals, one stroke away, and it’s disappointing.”
Harless said the competition level sometimes is a factor for players as well as the length of the event. This was only the third 18-hole tournament Mosley played in this season and he said when there is a rough patch it’s more difficult to pull out of than in a nine-hole match.
“It takes a little time to get back on track,” Harless said. “You can start struggling and it carries over from hole to hole and before you know it you’re way behind.”
Webb improved three shots from the front to the back-nine, but still couldn’t salvage a stellar score. Ginny Shipman shot a 111, Hailey Hartzog 118 and Megan Daniel a 127 for Mosley’s top four score, which count in team totals. Kacey Carter added a 150.
Hartzog was six strokes higher than her Bay County score and Daniel eight more.
“Some of them shot higher than they would have liked,” Harless. “But then again, most of the field did.”
Tallahassee Chiles won the tournament with a 390. Carlton Kuhlo won the individual medalist honor with a 72. She was the only player to be anywhere close to par.
The Region 1-2A tournament is in Tallahassee.
