American Heritage wins Class 1A football title
ORLANDO (AP) — Quarterback Darius Millines rushed for 182 yards and four touchdowns as Delray Beach American Heritage beat Trinity Christian Academy 30-20 to claim the Class 1A football title Friday night at the Citrus Bowl.
Millines, who is committed to West Virginia, scored on runs of 5, 49, 22 and 2 yards. His final touchdown came with 1:55 left and put his team ahead by 10.
The championship is American Heritage’s second. The Stallions, who closed the season with 11 straight wins, last earned the 1A crown in 2007.
Millines also passed for 39 yards and totaled 221 of American Heritage’s 318 yards. As a team, the Stallions (11-3) gained 279 yards on 55 rushing attempts. Greg Bryant, the second-leading rusher for American Heritage, finished with 85 yards on 13 attempts.
Trinity Christian, located in Jacksonville, was trying to win its first championship since 2003. It had two 100-yard rushers in Ahmad Christian (143) and Andrew Buie (133). Christian’s 99-yard touchdown run for Trinity Christian (13-1) closed the gap to 23-20 with 7:34 left in the fourth quarter. But American Heritage responded with a touchdown drive that covered 68 yards over 12 plays and consumed more than five minutes.
