Spencer captures consolation crown
ATHENS, Ga. — Ponce de Leon’s Wil Spencer, a senior at the University of Georgia, bounced back from a loss in his first match to win the consolation bracket title at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships held in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., Nov. 3-6.
Spencer defeated Bulldog teammate Sadio Doumbia 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the men’s singles consolation final held at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
Seeded seventh, Spencer fell to Fresno State’s Remi Boutiller in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in the opening round. He rebounded in the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Duke’s Chris Mengel and a 7-5, 6-0 sweep of Washington’s Kyle McMorrow to reach the consolation finals.
Spencer finished the fall season 16-2 overall. He led Georgia to the NCAA Division I semifinals last spring before the Bulldogs fell to eventual champion Southern Cal.
