LYNN HAVEN — It’s interesting how the field rarely factors into home-field advantage in most sports.

Consider that the advantages generally have nothing to do with the playing surface. Rather, the benefits generated are from pro-partisan crowd noise, players afforded a night’s sleep in their own beds or maybe home-cooked meals.

Mosley junior Taylor Murphy enjoyed a true home-field advantage on Tuesday afternoon, firing a 76 at Panama Country Club to secure medalist honors at the county boys golf championship. Murphy said he’s been a member at the private club for the past 6 years.

“It’s fair to say over a hundred,” Murphy said when asked how many rounds he’s played on a layout that Mosley also uses as its home course during golf season. “It helps you know where to put the ball. It’s the most important thing to know what to hit off the tee.”

Dolphin teammates Dillon Humphrey and Mac MacLaren shot 77 apiece to finish a stroke behind Murphy for low score. Dalton Humphrey added a 78 to help Mosley cruise to the team title with a final score of 308. Arnold was a distant second at 328, followed by Rutherford (385) and Bay (396).

“”That was our best score of the season,” Marlins coach Bob McKibbin said, noting it’s a positive sign headed into the upcoming district tournament. “At the end of the day (the county tournament) is all about who has the bragging rights. Mosley’s been a powerhouse …. They get to be the big dog in the county for another year.”

Murphy was disappointed with his round, although he did close strong to secure the win. He hadn’t made a birdie through 13 holes before posting three over the final five holes. He also had nine pars, five bogeys and a double bogey.

“I shot a 76, and I think most people would be pleased with that,” Murphy said. “I missed quite a few putts, and my irons weren’t good.”

Mosley reached the regional tournament last year and placed fourth. The Dolphins have high expectations this year, too, especially considering they’ll play that tournament on familiar ground at Panama Country Club — if they can get through the district tournament.

“It’s good to know we have a lot of players putting practice in,” Murphy said.
