Prep roundup (March 8): Watson paces Rutherford at FAMU relays
Comments 0 | Recommend 0TALLAHASSEE - Rutherford's Sean Watson took first in the discus with an effort of 123 feet, 7¼ inches to top his school's efforts Saturday in the 18-school FAMU Relays track and field meet. Bay's boys produced four first-place finishes.
Other top finishers for the Rams' boys were: John Franklin, fourth in the high jump at 5-10; Ryan Singleton sixth in the 1600-meter run in 4:53 and seventh in the 800 meters in 2:09; the sixth-place 4x100 relay of Lonnie Francis, Nick Smith, Reggie Turner and Darius Parham in 44.76 and seventh-place sprint medley of Parham, Turner, Ricky Pasco and Singleton in 3:57.
Rutherford's girls were paced by Adrianna Hill's second in the long jump of 16-11. The Lady Rams had runner-up relays in the 4x100 and 4x400. Hill, Sev'on Mills, Delisa Hewitt and Demetrica Daniels were timed in 51.32 in the shorter relay and Hill, Mills, Daniels and Meagan Thorpe ran 4:18 in the mile.
Thorpe added a fourth in the 100 hurdles in 20.01 and Daniels was fifth in the 400 in 1:03.14.
Bay was led by Jordan Gibson, winning the 300 hurdles in 42.73, and had three winning relays. They were: 4x100, 43.31, Justin Manchester, DeAndre Richardson, Deanthony Levins, Jordon Byas; sprint medley, 3:42.33, Byas, Manchester, Levins and Gabe Holguin; and 4x400, 3:22, Gibson, Manchester, Byas and T.J. Lowder.
Holguin was second in the 1600 in 4:43. Kevin Russell was third in the long jump in 20-2, Jamal Cain third in the high jump at 6-0 and the 4x800 relay of Gibson, Levins, Richardson and Holguin third in 8:47. Lawrence Williams was eighth in the 110 hurdles in 17.9.
Bay's girls had three relays place. The sprint medley of Sierra Jones, Shannon Healey, Joyce Dixon and Lashonte Pinkard was fourth; the 4x400 of Jones, Healey, Pinkard and Nefertiti Robinson was fifth and the 4x800 of Jones, Healey, Dixon and Pinkard also was fifth.
Rutherford hosts the Ram Relays next Saturday at Tommy Oliver Stadium.

PANAMA CITY
Bay picked up a pair of District 2-4A wins to improve to 6-1, overall, 4-1 in the district. David Trexler pitched a three-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts in the 9-0 win over East Gadsden County. Trexler also was 3 for 4 with an RBI, Danny Husum had two RBIs, James Wynn was 2 for 4 and Reid Wynn knocked in two runs.
James Wynn pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts in a 2-1 triumph over Godby. Derek Burke backed him with a two-run single in the first and along with Taylor McGuffin went 2 for 3.
Bay hosts Mosley 4 p.m. Thursday.

Opelika 10, Mosley 2
DOTHAN
Mosley split two games. In a 5-3 win over Northview, Seth Miller was 2 for 4, Jason Robbins 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Clay Davis was 2 for 3. The winning pitcher was Jordan Manis, who picked up his first victory of the season.
The Dolphins, 6-2, were held to five hits by Opelika. Robbins had a hit and RBI for Mosley. Miller was the losing pitcher.
Mosley hosts Leon 3 p.m. Tuesday in a District 2-5A game.
Holmes Co. 5-1, Carroll 2-0
BONIFAY
Four pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory in the second game as Holmes County swept Ozark (Ala.) Carroll. Zack Hodge's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth scored Aaron Mollet with the lone run of the game. Clayton French went 2 for 3 for the Blue Devils, 8-1.
In the opener, Jeremy McGowan was the winning pitcher with relief help from Jesse Gavin and Michael Johnson. Hodge was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, French 2 for 3 with one RBI and Gavin 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Holmes County hosts Marianna 6 p.m. Tuesday.
PDL 11, Pensacola Christian 0
PENSACOLA
Ryan Varner pitched a two-hitter in a game shortened to five innings by the run rule. Billy Johnson was 2 for 3 with a triple and RBI, Jared Bump was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBI and Brandon Howell had two doubles and an RBI for the Pirates, 6-1.
PDL travels to Baker at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

PORT ST. JOE
Matt Gannon pitched five innings for the win and had an RBI triple in Port St. Joe's win over Smith Station (Ala.). Chris Cochran pitched the final two innings for a save.
Jamie Bird had two hits, including a double, for the Tiger Sharks (4-5). Hayes Philyaw had a single, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
Marianna 10, Sneads 0
MARIANNA
Kyle Edwards tossed an abbreviated no-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Marianna secured a run-rule win. Lance Bailey was 2 for 3 with a double, Jon Sims had a double and two RBIs, Dustin Larkin had an RBI and Laramie Dryden and Adam Bigley each has RBI doubles for the Bulldogs (6-2), who host Brewbaker Tech out of Montgomery, Ala., on Monday.
