Soccer: McDaniel lifts Marlins boys past Rams

PANAMA CITY BEACH — A brief 20-second stretch during Arnold’s soccer game against Rutherford may have changed the future fortunes for both teams.

Thomas McDaniel spearheaded a quick-strike counterattack to post his second goal Wednesday night and lifted the host Marlins to a 2-1 victory over Rutherford in a District 2-3A matchup at the Gavlak Sports Complex.

The Marlins improved to 4-10-4 overall and 2-3-1 in the district. Most importantly, they avoided a first-round showdown with district champion Choctawhatchee in the district tournament beginning Jan. 24. That misfortune instead falls to Rutherford, which slipped to 3-7-3 overall and 1-4-1 in the district.

“This was a must-win game for us,” Arnold coach Rick Sylvester said.

The teams were tied 1-all 15 minutes into the second half when Rutherford’s Eric Riley, who scored in the first half, served a perfectly placed pass in front of the Arnold goal on a free kick. The Rams failed to convert on the play, but that wasn’t the team’s worst mistake. Rutherford didn’t recover quickly enough on defense, which opened up an opportunity for Arnold to counter.

And counter the Marlins did.

Goalkeeper Josh Murphy quickly booted the ball upfield to Austin Peffers, who sent the ball ahead to McDaniel at midfield. McDaniel raced toward the Rams’ goal and outran his closest pursuer before using his right foot to score his second goal and provide the final margin.

“It was all in the moment,” McDaniel said.

The teams battled to a 1-1 tie at halftime with goals three minutes apart midway through the first half.

McDaniel scored first when a Rutherford defender misplayed a header deep in the Rams’ half of the field. McDaniel intercepted the ball and quickly tucked a shot inside the far post for a one-goal edge.

Riley answered moments later for Rutherford. Javen Threatt redirected the ball to Riley nearby, and Riley immediately put the ball on net. His shot scorched past a diving Murphy to tie the game.

The contest didn’t end without controversy. With a little more than two minutes remaining, Rutherford’s Josh Williams was tackled at the edge of the 18-yard box. Despite his insistence he was tackled inside the box — which would have resulted in a penalty kick — the referee responsible for the call instead awarded the Rams a free kick just outside the box. Arnold’s defense turned away the threat and preserved the victory.
