Girls basketball

Orlando Bishop Moore 55, Pensacola 39

LAKELAND

Sarah Blackburn scored 14 points and Orlando Bishop Moore started the game on a 16-0 run as the Hornets ended Pensacola’s bid for a perfect season with a win in the Class 4A girls basketball final.

Bishop Moore (28-4) was ahead 26-8 after one quarter and led by as many as 22 points. In the second half, Pensacola (27-1) never got to within fewer than 12.

The title is the first for Bishop Moore, which was the state runner-up in 2005 and 2006, and was making its fifth final four appearance at The Lakeland Center since 2002.

During the Hornets first-quarter run, they shot 12 of 24 from the field, recorded five steals, outrebounded Pensacola 16-6 and held the Tigers to four-of-14 shooting as six Bishop Moore players scored.

Pensacola’s point total was its lowest (by five) this season. The Tigers, frustrated throughout by Bishop Moore’s full-court pressure, got a game-high 22 points from junior forward Bianca Lutley, but as a team shot only 14 of 53 from the field (26.4 percent).

Blackburn, a sophomore guard, also had nine rebounds and three assists for Bishop Moore, which had a balanced offensive attack.

Hornet’s senior forward Chandler McCabe had 10 points.

North Florida Christian 54, Mayo Lafayette 44

LAKELAND

Melanie Warner scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Tallahassee North Florida Christian overcame a slow start to defeat Mayo Lafayette in the Class 2A girls basketball final.

The win at The Lakeland Center gave the Eagles, who were state runners-up in 2006 and 2007, their program’s first title.

NFC (28-4) trailed 18-8 early in the second quarter before rallying behind the play of Warner, a 5-foot-11 senior power forward, and senior small forward Samantha Phillips, who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Lafayette (28-3) led 23-22 at the break, but NFC started the second half with a 10-0 run to take control. The Eagles outscored the Hornets 20-7 in the third quarter to build a 12-point lead.

Lafayette closed to within 49-44 with 59.6 seconds left on a Sunshine Reid layup, but NFC hit five of eight from the foul line in the final minute to seal it.

Reid, a sophomore guard, led Lafayette with 15 points, but was only six of 19 from the floor. Senior guard Natalie Land added 14 to finish with 3,374 career points.

JV basketball

Covenant 41, Emmanuel 39

ROBERTSDALE, Ala.

Kristo Kleimeyer scored with four seconds remaining in overtime to lead Covenant (11-4) to a victory over Emmanuel Christian and the Panhandle Christian Conference title.

Kleimeyer, the tournament MVP, scored 11 points and had 16 rebounds.

Covenant led 19-18 at halftime in a back-and-forth battle. Dave Bingham, who had eight points and 16 rebounds, tied the game to force overtime.

Zach Bingham added 14 points for the Lions.
