Bay volleyball wins
Bay improved to 3-3 in District 1-5A and 6-7 overall with a 25-23, 23-25, 25-9, 25-17 win Tuesday night at West Florida Tech in Pensacola. Jesse Bosch-Brown had five aces and Jaime Bell three for the Tornadoes. Sierra Burris had 15 kills and Erin Pennington 10 and Marley Peters had 36 assists. Bay’s next match is at Fort Walton Beach on Monday.
Bay’s JV won 25-9, 25-12 as Na’kiya Russell and Haley Melnick each had four aces. Emily Little had six kills and Taylor Lee 10 assists. The JV is 8-5 overall, 4-1 district.
Football rankings
Holmes County remained entrenched at No. 2 in Class 1A, and was joined by District 3-1A fellow member Chipley at No. 5 in the most recent poll released this week. The Blue Devils are 5-0 and received 99 points, second to unbeaten Union County (4-0) which received at 12 first-place votes. Trenton is third, The Villages fourth and Chipley (4-1) rounds out the Top 5. No other area school is ranked or received votes.
Newest Tornado
Bay has struggled to field a competent kicking game during the early season, but may have taken a step forward in that regard. Last week Jarod Wilkins, a veteran on the Tornadoes’ soccer team, joined the squad. Wilkins wasn’t able to add to productivity against Mosley, as the Tornadoes were unable to score. His lone effort vs. the Dolphins came on the opening kickoff, but during warmups he did show a strong leg and range approaching 50 yards.
Kicking queen
Shortly after being named homecoming queen, a Michigan girl gave her fellow students another big reason to cheer: Brianna Amat kicked the field goal that proved to be the difference as Pinckney Community High School beat Grand Blanc 9-7 on Friday.
Earlier, she rode in Pinckney’s homecoming parade, wearing her football uniform, along with the team’s quarterback.
She told the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus that after the soccer season ended last school year she gave field goal kicking a try at the urging of the school’s coaches. She has been playing soccer since age 3.
Season ended
Having 12 players on the football field didn't prompt a penalty flag for a small western Nebraska high school — it's ended its season. Athletic Director Tom Peacock says the Morrill Lions canceled their season Tuesday after the team's 18-player roster dwindled to 12. Four players suffered season-ending injuries and two other players who moved. Morrill hasn't won a game since 2008 and was outscored 243-32 in five games this year. The cancellation means that Morrill will forfeit its three remaining games. Morrill is in Class C2, the smallest division that plays 11-man football. Peacock said the school board would consider moving next fall to Class D1, which plays eight-man football. Morrill has about 50 boys in grades 9-12.
