Prep roundup (Jan. 16): Bozeman girls fall in district title match

In girls basketball, PDL hitting its stride

NICEVILLE - The Bozeman girls soccer team fell to Rocky Bayou 2-1 in the District 1-2A championship game on Thursday.

Bozeman (7-4-2) defeated Sneads 7-0 on Tuesday to secure the Bucks a place in the regional tournament. The regional berth will be Bozeman’s third straight.

Boys soccer

Rutherford 2, Fort Walton Beach 0

SPRINGFIELD

Rutherford’s Corey Robertson scored two first-half goals and Ram keeper Matt Treadway made three saves in a win over Fort Walton Beach.

Rutherford (6-6-2) plays Bay at Tommy Oliver Stadium tonight (JV 5 p.m. and varsity 7 p.m.).

Rutherford’s Matt Thibodaux scored the Rams’ only goal in a 3-1 junior varsity loss.

Girls basketball

Ponce de Leon 68, Freeport 11

FREEPORT

Ponce de Leon remained unbeaten in District 1-2A with a win over Freeport.

Hillary Harper led PDL (17-4, 7-0) with 18 points, Ashlee Parson had 13 and Gypsy Griffin had nine.

Ponce de Leon plays tonight at district rival Baker.

Mosley 47, Marianna 33

MARIANNA

Mosley junior Sara Evans scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a win over Marianna.

Christy White added 15 points and four assists and Octavia Langston had six points and five rebounds.

Mosley (16-5 overall) plays its final regular-season district game tonight at Tallahassee Leon. Leon is 5-1 and Mosley 6-1 in district.

Mosley lost the junior varsity game 30-29 in overtime. Courtney Patton led the Dolphins with 16 points, Kierra West had five points and 10 rebounds and Rachel Faucheax had four points and seven rebounds.

Cottondale 57, Walton 32

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS

Shaunte Forward scored 16 points to lead Cottondale (21-2) to a victory over Walton.

Sherisa Forward had 12 points and Brianna Gray added 10 for the Hornets.

Cottondale hosts Blountstown today at 5 p.m.

Covenant 67, Emmanuel 23

DOTHAN, Ala.

Covenant (15-4) picked up its third win in four nights, and remained undefeated (8-0) in the Panhandle Christian Conference with a win over Emmanuel.

Heather Smith and Haley Sheffield each scored 13 points, Hannah Dobernig had 10 points and

Rachel Phelps scored eight points for the Lions.

Covenant is at Bethlehem on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Boys basketball

FAMU 86, Port St. Joe 74

TALLAHASSEE

Port St. Joe (11-8) pulled within four points in the final minute, but could not overtake FAMU High.

Willie Quinn led Port St. Joe with 15 points, Ramone Beard added 14, Ricardo Clemmens had 13 and Calvin Pryor 12 for the Tiger Sharks.

The game was tied 36-36 at halftime.

The Port St. Joe JV team defeated FAMU 69-57. Kris Thomas had 21 points for the Tiger Sharks (12-4).

Port St. Joe hosts Franklin County on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Covenant 75, Emannuel Christian 23

DOTHAN, Ala.

Covenant’s Ryan Brown and Justin Schaefer combined for 48 points as the Lions breezed past Emanuel Christian.

Brown had 26 points, Schaefer scored 22 points with 10 steals and seven assists and Dave Bingham added 10 points for Covenant (14-7 overall, 7-1 in the Panhandle Christian Conference).

Covenant’s junior varsity (7-1) suffered its first loss, 49-20.

The Lions’ varsity plays at Bethlehem on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Blountstown 47, Bozeman 44

SAND HILLS

Blountstown used a 14-7 third-quarter edge to defeat Bozeman (9-11, 1-9 District 2-2A) in the Bucks’ final home game of the season.

Senior Kyle Soto led the Bucks with 10 points. Kevin Swinney had a double-double with 10 blocks and 14 rebounds.

Bozeman led 27-19 at halftime.

The Blountstown JV team defeated Bozeman 32-31 on a last-second shot.

Michael Hentschel had 13 points for the Bucks (7-10).

Bozeman is at Wewahitchka today with the JV starting at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.

PCCS 78, Maranatha 67

TALLAHASSEE

Panama City Christian had three players in double figures in an 11-point victory over Maranatha.

Tabias Williams led the Crusaders with 26 points, Nate Smith had 20 points and Erick Jones had 15.

PCCS plays at Emmanuel today at 5:30 p.m.

Wewa 72, Poplar Springs 46

POPLAR SPRINGS

Chris Peak scored 25 points and Christian Owens added 17 points as Wewahitchka defeated Poplar Springs.

Wewa (3-12) hosts Bozeman tonight at 7 p.m.

Franklin County 66, Jefferson County 50

APALACHICOLA

Franklin County’s Carlos Morris scored 23 points and DeShaun Winfield had 14 in a victory over Jefferson County.

Franklin County improved to 11-5 with the win.
