Prep roundup (Nov. 7): Evans leads way for Mosley swimming

TALLAHASSEE - Mosley senior Sara Evans won both of her events pacing the Mosley girls team to a third-place finish in the Region 1-2A swimming and diving meet that concluded Thursday. Swimmers from Rutherford and Bay also competed.

Mosley's boys team placed fourth, marking the highest regional finish for either Mosley squad at a region swimming meet. Ponte Vedra Beach Nease won the girls crown and Fort Walton Beach took the boys title.

Evans qualified for the state meet to be held Nov. 15 in Orlando. She could be joined by a number of other Bay County swimmers who reached the finals in their events, as well as most of Mosley's relay quartets.

The remaining qualifiers will be based on the 20 best results, per event, from all four Class 2A regions. They will join the region champions for a state field of 24 participants in each event, 16 for relays.

The county swimmers who reached the finals in their events were: Michael Perdomo, Mosley junior, sevenh in 200 freestyle; Victoria Hove, Mosley freshman, seventh in 200 IM; Matt Bryant, Mosley junior, eighth in 200 IM, third in 100 butterfly; Candice Hilton, Mosley senior, fifth in 50 freestyle; Kurt Fuhrmann, Mosley junior, seventh in diving; Garrett Casey, Mosley junior, eighth in diving; Mary McDermott, Mosley junior, seventh in 500 freestyle; Laura Kearns, Rutherford freshman, eighth in 500 freestyle and Matt Reece, Mosley junior, eighth in 100 breaststroke.

Mosley relays all placed in the championship heats as follows: girls 200 medley relay second, boys 200 medley relay fourth, girls 200 freestyle relay sixth, boys 200 freestyle relay third, girls 400 freestyle relay fourth, boys 400 freestyle relay sixth.

    Bay 3, Wakulla 0

    WAKULLA
    Three Bay players scored as the Tornadoes (1-0, 1-0 Distirct 2-4A) defeated Wakulla in a season-opening game.
    Shelby McHugh, Katie Carroll and Alex Burrier each scored for Bay. Angelica Middleton had an assist.

Bay keeper Suzie Turnage had seven saves.

Bay faces Arnold on Monday at Frank Brown Park at 5 p.m.

PANAMA CITY BEACH
Arnold's Kirsten Crowley scored the only goal with just 30 seconds remaining in the match as the Marlins beat Pensacola Tate.

Marlins' keeper Maggie Gardner made five saves.
Arnold (2-0) plays Navarre today at 1 p.m. at Frank Brown Park.
