Tennis: Mosley's Decker, Windholtz earn state bids

In other action, Arnold girls, Bay boys poised to advance on Thursday

FORT WALTON BEACH — Adam Decker came to play, all right.

The Mosley senior avenged a first-round loss in last year’s district tournament with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 win over Leon’s Josh Record to win the District 2-3A singles title at the Fort Walton Beach Tennis Center and advance to the FHSAA Finals April 28-29.

“I started off playing about as good as I could and he actually wasn’t playing as good as I’ve seen him play,” Decker said. “The next set he played amazing. He didn’t miss a first serve for probably the entire set.

“He took it down a little bit and I brought it back up, and that’s pretty much what happened.”

While Decker was celebrating a return to the state tournament, teammate Caleb Windholtz was basking in the joy of qualifying for state for the first time in doubles with Decker.

Mosley’s girls advanced to the Region 1-3A tournament next week by finishing second behind Tallahassee Leon. The Dolphins’ boys came in third with 12 points behind Leon’s 14 and Lincoln’s 13.

In District 1-2A, Bay’s boys and Arnold’s girls are in position to advance to regionals heading into Thursday’s finals at West Florida.

The Tornadoes are tied for second behind Gulf Breeze with Pensacola with seven points. The Marlins are in third with two and the Rams are fourth.

“I was a little disappointed in the guys,” Bay coach Kay Kovaleski said. “We knew (No.) 5 was going to be close, but we didn’t get any points at No. 3, that we were not expecting. Other than that, everybody was what we were expecting. It’s going to be close (Thursday). Other teams are really coming on, so we shall see.”

Arnold’s girls are one point behind first-place Gulf Breeze, followed by Bay, Pensacola, Rutherford and West Florida.

The singles finals begin at 9 a.m. Thursday with Bay’s Jason Moody the lone No. 1 player left from area teams. Doubles semifinals follow after.

The Lady Marlins are depending on their three, four and five players to advance, Arnold coach Walt Hodges said.
