Chipley's Holiday Express among holiday events

CHIPLEY — Mosley, Graceville and Wewahitchka join host Chipley as area schools participating in the second annual Holiday Express boys basketball tournament beginning on Tuesday.

Pensacola and Niceville also will represent the Panhandle against Georgia schools Early County and Turner County.

All schools are guaranteed three games. The schedule:

Tuesday, Dec. 27

  • 4 p.m. — Mosley vs. Early County (Ga.)
  • 5:30 p.m — Pensacola vs. Turner County (Ga.)
  • 7 p.m. — Niceville vs. Graceville
  • 8:30 p.m. Chipley vs. Wewahitchka

Wednesday, Dec. 28

  • 4 p.m.— Loser Mosley-Early County vs. loser Pensacola-Turner County.
  • 5:30 p.m. — Loser Niceville-Graceville vs. loser Chipley-Wewahitchka
  • 7 p.m. — Winner Mosley-Early County vs. winner Pensacola-Turner County
  • 8:30 p.m. — Winner Niceville-Graceville vs. winner Chipley-Wewahitchka

Thursday, Dec. 29

  • 4 p.m. — seventh-place game
  • 5:30 p.m. — fifth-place game
  • 7 p.m. — third-place game
  • 8:30 p.m. — first-place game

Capital City Classic

Rutherford’s unbeaten boys basketball team is likely to get its most severe tests thus far in the Capital City Classic held Dec. 29 and 30 at the Alfred Lawson Jr. Center on Florida A&M’s campus.

Rutherford meets East Gadsden 3:35 CST on Thursday, Dec. 29 and takes on Godby, a squad Rams coach Rhondie Ross said has been strengthened greatly from last season and was unbeaten through the early phase of the season, at 7 p.m. CST on Dec. 30.

A total of 12 teams are participating in the event which is more of a basketball showcase than elimination tournament.

The Rams also will play Barnstorm  Classic Christmas Tournament participant Dickson County (Tenn.) on Tuesday in one of three games held that day not directly affecting the upcoming tournament draw.

Hickory Point Invitational

Arnold’s boys soccer team participates in the 16-school Hickory Point Invitational beginning Tuesday.

The Marlins will open against Spruce Creek at 1 p.m. CST, a very tough draw according to Coach Rick Sylvester. On Wednesday, the Marlins will face Edgewater or Osceola.

The tournament concludes on Thursday.
