Mosley boys stumble to 14th place at state golf
DUNNELLON — Taylor Murphy fired a 4-over 76 to lead Mosley at the boys Class 2A state golf tournament at the Juliette Falls golf resort on Tuesday.
Murphy didn’t get a lot of help, though, and Mosley is tied with Tampa Wharton for 14th place out of 16 teams with a four-person tally of 327. Spruce Creek of Port Orange leads the team standings by four strokes over second-place Sarasota Riverview with a first-day total of 294.
“A very disappointing first round for us,” Mosley coach Mike Riley said. “We had a lot of trouble on the greens with more three-putts than I could count. Some of the guys worked hard on putting after today’s round, so hopefully we can put together a better round tomorrow.”
Murphy is tied for 31st, eight strokes behind leader Danny Walker of Bradenton Lakewood Ranch. Mosley’s Dillon Humphrey shot a 7-over 79 and is tied for 47th. Also for the Dolphins, Dalton Humphrey shot an 84, and Jeff Madison and Mac MacLaren shot matching 88s.
Only two golfers broke par on a difficult 6,700-yard layout. Walker was 4-under, and Jeffery Pearce of Jacksonville Sandalwood sits at 1-under 71. Eight others shot even-par 72s.
The two-day, 36-hole tournament ends today.
“We’re just going to go out tomorrow and fire at the flags and see how much ground we can make up on the teams in front of us,” Riley said.
