Locals still seeking Dizzy Dean titles

Championship dreams still are alive for most of the local teams competing in the Dizzy Dean World Series.

Mosley’s 16-under team advanced to today’s winners’ bracket final at 9 a.m. in Southaven, Miss., with a 2-1 victory over the Grenada (Miss.) Recreation All-Stars. Austin Bizzle pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks. Ryan Lackey drove in a run in the second inning and Mosley scored on an error in the fourth.

Mosley plays Rome, Ga., today. A victory pushes it to within one more win of a title.

Rutherford is playing, in the 16U losers’ bracket. Rutherford won three straight games played on Sunday and Monday, a 7-0 win over the Oxford (Miss.) Rebels propelling the Rams to today’s noon game. They need another three straight wins to claim the championship.

A Mosley-laden team under a Panama City banner is competing in the Senior Division in Boynton, Ga. It won its first elimination game 10-9 over Royals of Maryland on Monday. Mosley scored eight runs in the first two innings and led 10-3 until the Royals chipped away at the lead.

Dustin Saulmon earned a save while preserving the win for starting pitcher Lucas Tucker. Trenton Emanuel and Josh Jonas each had three RBIs, Seth Miller drove in two runs and Jeffrey Pitts had an RBI.

Panama City played Johnson City (Tenn.) later Monday in a semifinal which was slated to begin at least an hour late due to rain.

In 14U — the other tournaments also in Southaven — the Central All-Stars have won two straight games since losing their opener on Saturday. Central defeated Grenada 18-3 on Monday to advance in the losers’ bracket. Central scored 18 runs in each of its last two wins and was scheduled to play later Monday in an elimination game.

In 8U, Panama City Beach was 2-1 in pool play, with its only loss to group winner Tupelo, Miss. Panama City Beach opened the single-elimination championship bracket with a 7-5 win over Clay. PCB played the East Cherokee Rebels later Monday in the quarterfinal round.

Also in 8U, the Central All-Stars finished 1-2 in pool play, their lone win against Southaven. Central advanced to the consolation bracket.
