Little things matter as Chipley wins Homecoming game (See Photos)
CHIPLEY — “Little things matter,” Coach Rob Armstrong told his jubilant Chipley Tigers after the game Friday night. “Like an extra point.”
Preston Wilson and John Teal led the charge that blocked a Maclay extra-point attempt with 55 seconds left in the game to give the host Tigers a 14-13 Homecoming win. Chipley improved to 2-4. Maclay fell to 2-3.
The blocked kick came off a set play, Armstrong said.
“We put our three big guys in the middle and push the guard,” he said. “It worked great.”
Early on, it looked like Chipley would dominate as the Tigers scored on a 17-yard run by Shonquelle Swain with 5:55 left in the first quarter, with Jared Bozarth’s kick making it 7-0. Maclay came back with 11:37 left in the half when the Marauders converted a blocked punt into a touchdown to tie the score at the half.
Chipley took the second-half kickoff to the Maclay 7 before turning the ball over on a fumble. The Tigers stopped a Maclay drive on Johnny Watford’s interception.
Later in the fourth quarter, the Tigers put together a six-play drive closed out by Swain’s 4-yard touchdown run and Bozarth’s extra point. The Marauders answered with a 1-yard touchdown run by Lee Williams. Then came the blocked kick to seal Chipley’s win.
“We did some good things to win the game when it came down to it,” Armstrong said.
The Tigers travel to Marianna next Friday for a district matchup.
