Three area wrestlers still alive at state

LAKELAND — The first day of the Class 1A and 2A state wrestling championships was not kind to Bay County wrestlers.

Mosley senior Ryan Newsome and Bozeman sophomore Kris Kenney were the only wrestlers from the 12 who qualified to win their first-round matches, and both were defeated in the quarterfinals.

After four rounds of wrestling, only Jimmy Kahle of Mosley and Joel Ensminger and Zane Turnipseed of Arnold were still in contention to wrestle Saturday and qualify for place matches.

Newsome, wrestling at 140 pounds in the Class 2A event where he placed fifth last year, decisioned Matthew Dixon of Osceola, then was defeated by Darius Paddyfote of Lake Gibson and elminated by Austin Prince in wrestlebacks.

Kenney pinned Robert Kratman of Chaminade in 41 seconds at 160 pounds in the 1A tournament. He then lost a 14-12 decision to Christian Padilla of Robinson and was eliminated the next round.

Six other wrestlers bounced back from losses in the prelims to stay alive with a victory in the first consolation round. They were Mosley’s Kahle at 145 pounds in 2A, Arnold’s Joel Ensminger (119), Doug Miner (125), Colby Baker (130) and Zane Turnipseed (145) in 1A, and Bay’s Tyrell Biggs at 285 in 1A.

After the second round of consolations, only Ensminger, Turnipseed and Kahle avoided elimination.

Four wrestlers were eliminated following consecutive losses Friday. They included Brady Smith and Forrest Lang of Mosley, Jayme Atkins of Arnold and Brandon Reyes of Bozeman.

The tournament continues this morning with the third round of wrestlebacks at 8 a.m. CST immediately followed by the semifinals. Then comes the fourth round of wrestlebacks succeeded by the fifth- and sixth-place finals, then the third- and fourth-place finals.

Championship matches in all classes begin Saturday evening.
