Mosley, PC teams win Dizzy Dean World Series titles

To say this summer has been good to Mosley High School baseball would be an understatement.

The school’s summer team won the 16-under Dizzy Dean World Series on Wednesday in Southaven, Miss. Another all-star team comprised of mostly Mosley players won the Dizzy Dean Senior Division title late Tuesday in Boynton, Ga.

Mosley’s 16U team shut out Rome, Ga., 10-0 in a game shortened to five innings by run rule. The Dolphins finished 36-4.

Mosley scored three runs in the first inning and four more in the fourth to ignite the rout. The run support was more than enough for winning pitcher Joey Hair, who struck out 10, walked none and gave up only one hit. Jordan Larry was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Zach Rhodes had two RBIs, Greg Gladden drove in one run and Greg Gladden was 2 for 2.

The Senior Division team, playing under a Panama City banner, had to hold on for a 12-9 victory over Boynton in the title game.

Panama City led 12-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth before Boynton scored five runs against starter Travis Register. Dustin Saulmon entered with the bases loaded and two outs and induced a liner to right field that Jordan Williams dived to catch and quell the threat.

Seth Miller, the tournament MVP, had a double, triple and five RBIs to pace Panama City’s offense. Trenton Emanuel had two hits and three RBIs and Register struck out four for the win.

Saulmon, Emanuel, Register, Miller and Josh Jonas made the all-tournament team. Panama City finished its state and World Series tournament runs with an unbeaten 12-0 mark.

Mosley baseball coach Todd Harless, who mentored Panama City this summer, said the finishes for both teams bode well for the future of the program.

“It’s good for all of these kids to be rewarded for their hard work,” Harless said. “The biggest thing we did this summer is improve with our pitchers throwing strikes.

“We were an extremely young team (in the spring) and these kids are starting to get confidence and it will be good for us in the coming year.”

Another team from Lynn Haven was ousted in the 8U Dizzy Dean consolation bracket late Tuesday. It finished tied for 37th overall.
