Bay routs Mosley boys

PANAMA CITY - First-year Bay coach Michael Grady put his fist down prior to the Bay Tornadoes first home game of the season.

His team responded by locking down Mosley 68-40 at the John L. Cobb Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Grady benched most of his starting lineup for minor disciplinary reasons, such as arriving late to practice and not wearing a tie on game day. He inserted the starters later in the game, but the Tornadoes (3-1) started slow, scoring just nine points and taking a one-point lead after the first quarter.

"Guys weren't focused," Grady said. "If our execution wasn't perfect, at least the guys' effort was strong."

Bay turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter, overwhelming Mosley (0-2) into turnovers and errant shots. The Tornadoes started the stanza with an 8-2 run and they finished the half ahead by 10.

Although the game eventually got out of hand, Mosley coach Chris Martello was pleased with the Dolphins improvement from last week's season opening loss to Franklin County.

"I think we played as well as we have in a year and a half," Martello said. "The kids are understanding what the coaches want. That'll be the difference between winning and losing.

"If you improve that much in a week, the sky's the limit."

Darryus Stewart carried Mosley, scoring a game-high 20 points. Fred Brown was the Dolphins next highest scorer with eight.

Mosley scored the first two baskets of the second half and trailed by six before Bay put the outcome out of reach.

Ethan Roulhac scored the next five points for Bay, including hitting two of three free throws after getting fouled attempting a 3-pointer. Dezmond Taylor grabbed the offensive rebound and after three passes hit a layup and got fouled. He missed the ensuing free throw, but Bay was already in the midst of a 13-2 run. Taylor's layup with 3 minutes, 20 seconds left in the third quarter put the Tornadoes ahead 44-27.

Roulhac scored 15 points and Kelvin Russell led Bay with 16.

"We do like to play fast and under control," Grady said. "We just want to do what it takes to win."

Bay didn't relent in the final eight minutes, allowing just eight points in the fourth quarter.

Grady remained content sitting in his chair, shouting out plays in his home debut, much unlike his predecessor. Although the Tornadoes cruised to a win, it wasn't pretty, he said.

"It was sloppy, but the effort was high, the intensity was high," Grady said. "It was memorable. If I could use one word it'd be memorable. I thought the kids played hard. The fan support was good for an early season game."
